New Free Web Site for English-Learners

On November 7, 2008, Internet and Media Services launched U.S.A. Learns, a free Web site designed to support immigrants who want to learn or improve their English as they become part of American society. While a broad range of adults can use U.S.A. Learns, it was developed primarily for immigrant adults with limited English language skills who cannot attend traditional classroom programs because of difficulty with schedules, transportation, or other barriers.

The videos, graphics, and exercises were built around settings and situations that should be familiar to immigrant populations. In addition, the site has been designed with the inexperienced Web user in mind. A simple interface runs throughout all the materials, making it accessible to populations with limited schooling in their native country. Online help is available including an on-screen character that talks to users to help them get started. The user can choose to have the character speak in either English or Spanish. U.S.A. Learns is free, and little or no orientation is needed to learn how to use it. All instructional materials are online; there are no videos or workbooks to purchase. In total the site includes more than 400 hours of learning activities.

While the site is designed primarily for independent study, a tutor or teacher can use the Web site’s learning management system to set up classes and invite students to study English on the site and get feedback from them on their work. The learning management system enables educators to view students' work, provide feedback, email students in the class, and even set up communication among students in the class.
